Showdown of the Season: What Is the Best Holiday Movie?

Dec 19, 2019 | Marketplace

As the holiday season ramps up, it seems everyone has strong feelings about which holiday traditions are the best. What’s the best holiday food? Why are we still listening to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas?” And, most importantly, is Die Hard really a holiday movie?

Naturally, this turned into a team discussion about the best holiday movie. After a heated debate, we finally agreed to let the Lucid Marketplace decide. In true Lucid fashion, we couldn’t just throw a single survey to the Marketplace – we decided to have fun with it and created a 16-movie bracket.

1 A Christmas Story
2 Jingle All the Way
3 National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
4 How the Grinch Stole Christmas
5 It’s a Wonderful Life
6 Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
7 Frosty the Snowman
8 Elf
9 Charlie Brown Christmas
10 Love, Actually
11 Miracle on 34th Street
12 Die Hard
13 Bad Santa
14 The Santa Clause
15 The Holiday
16 Home Alone

The Sweet 16

For seeding, we ran a quick survey (since we didn’t want to spark another debate). And we wanted the Marketplace to decide the fate of this anyway. We set up an individual survey on the Lucid Marketplace and fielded a nationally representative set of 300 respondents per matchup.

Each survey was one simple question: Which holiday movie is better? (Of course, we gave those folks who hadn’t seen either movie the option to tell us that as well so we could remove them from the data.)

So, without further ado, let’s dive into the holiday season’s biggest winners and losers!

The Elite 8

There’s no surprise that A Christmas Story beats out Jingle All the Way. If you have any qualms with that, you should probably see a doctor.

The Grinch pulling out a win over Christmas Vacation hurt me a bit, but I can appreciate it. Cousin Eddie might have something to say though.

Rudolph coming in hot and taking out It’s a Wonderful Life – honestly, this might have been the most difficult matchup in the Round of 16. There’s so much nostalgia. It’s really a shame that one of them had to go out this early, but what can ya do?

Elf just wasn’t ready for Frosty’s smoke. Buddy the Elf stood about as good of a chance as Frosty would in the New Orleans summer heat.

Charlie Brown doing Charlie Brown things and securing the 1st round victory. Good man…

Miracle on 34th Street upsetting the cult following that somehow thinks Die Hard is a holiday movie.

Let’s face it – Bad Santa never had a shot. That seeding was bogus.

Home Alone securing a win over a highly underrated The Holiday. Home Alone was never going to lose this one though.

 The Final 4

The Grinch is out here just ruining everyone’s buzz. First he takes out Christmas Vacation, and now A Christmas Story? Alright Grinch, go ‘head.

Rudolph vs. Frosty is a battle for the ages. Rudolph is taking out some heavy hitters – first, It’s a Wonderful Life and now Frosty? This guy is guiding sleighs and taking names.

Lucy still has yet to pull the football out from under Charlie Brown. Maybe Kevin McAllister takes that on in his side hustle in the Final 4, or is Lucy going to be nice during this holiday season?

The Finals

Okay Grinch now you’ve gone too far. This aggression will not stand, man.

And there it is. Lucy vs. Kevin McAllister was just going to be a losing proposition for our friend Chuck.

AND THE WINNER IS…

Kevin McAllister is the hero we all needed in this bracket. And now I can sleep easy at night knowing The Grinch didn’t take it down.

Keep the change, ya filthy animal.
